Happy Mardi Gras!

Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is the prelude to the season of Lent. Way back, it was a day in which all the oil, eggs and dairy products in the house were used up in one last feast before Lenten fasting began. (Yes, not only did we use to fast every Friday in Lent, and abstain from meat for the whole season, we used to abstain from these other things as well for the forty days, as our Orthodox Christian brothers and sisters still do.). Pancakes conveniently use all of those ingredients, so some churches call this Pancake Tuesday and have Pancake Dinners.

As we launch ourselves across the great ocean of Lent (to borrow from the Orthodox again), I invite you to consider how you will fast, pray and give alms in ways that bring God closer to the center of your life, and in ways that bring our world closer to Jesus’ vision of the Kingdom of God.  ~ Karen

PARTICIPATE IN SURVEY FOR THE SYNOD ON THE FAMILY

This past October was the first gathering of the world’s Catholic bishops in the Vatican for the opening of the Synod on the Family. (If you follow any Catholic news sites, you probably saw items related to the synod and its discussions on marriage, family, divorce, and gays and lesbians.) That synod was preceded by a questionnaire Catholics were invited to fill out, to give the bishops wide input on the topics they were going to discuss. Next October is the second and final gathering of the Synod, and there is a questionnaire you are invited to fill out for this one too. It’s long, but if you have any life experiences or opinions or strong thoughts on the topics of family and marriage, this is the place to express them and have your voice heard!
